Bowled out by the Blitz

May 13th was not a lucky day for the Gonville Bowling Club in Thornton Heath.

This year sees the 60th anniversary of when the club was bombed out in 1941.

The explosion luckily missed nearby houses and people but totally destroyed the pavilion, blowing out windows and slates from homes in Trafford Road and Gonville Road.

By June 14th the houses had been repaired and bowlers had cleared away the debris on Rink 1 to carry on playing.
